ASID Carolinas Information

Have you held any leadership positions with ASID Carolinas? If so, in what capacity?
Emma: I have held the following leadership positions: ASID Carolinas 2019-2021 Professional Development Director (Board of Directors), ASID Carolinas 2017 Nominating Committee member, ASID Carolinas 2014-2016 Membership Director (Board of Directors), and 2012-2014 ASID Triad Design Community Chair.

Sydney: I'm a new member and couldn’t be more excited to join!

What event of ASID’s have you enjoyed the most and why?
The ASID Carolinas Chapter and Homebuilder's Association of Winston-Salem Showhouse in 2015.  We both participated in it and had such a great time meeting other designers and gaining exposure in the Winston-Salem area. Brookberry Farms is a fun area to work in and we’ve loved going back there for new projects.

What do you gain most out of your ASID membership?
Camaraderie with other designers. From the most seasoned veterans to students just starting their interior design careers, having a group of professionals to bounce ideas off of, relate to, and discuss current issues in the design field is invaluable. A lot of interior design firms are small so it limits peer interaction, but ASID unites a vast network of designers from all over the country so we can all advance our profession as whole.

If you could give advice to any student coming into the design industry, what would that be?
Persevere! Do not give up on your dream. It can be a difficult industry to enter and often times, new designers are discouraged because the entry level jobs are not at all what you imagine when you're toiling away in the CAD lab in school. Look for jobs that hone your skill set or give you a brand new one.  Don’t stress out about the job title or getting your own projects right away.  A lot of times that first job opens the door to a whole new direction you weren’t even considering.

Favorite project you've worked on?
Our favorite project was a complete kitchen remodel in Irving Park, Greensboro. The client and homebuilder brought us on the project after demo had already begun and their 'general plan' no longer worked.  We were able to work around several large problems that were discovered in demo, as well as completely personalize the kitchen to the unique personalities of our clients. This project launched several new projects for us as well as an article in a local magazine.

What is one of your proudest accomplishments?
Our new company.  We launched Kindred Interior Studios in the summer of 2019 when we realized that working together was the obvious next step in both our careers. We both needed flexible schedules and the ability to mold our work lives around our family needs. We’ve been extremely proud of how much success we’ve seen so far and recently launched our new website.
