A Successful Design Community Event!
November Tour of American College of the Building Arts

On November 15, the Lowcountry Design Community was given a private, behind-the-scenes tour of The American College of the Building Arts (ACBA), located in Charleston, SC. Founded in the aftermath of Hurricane Hugo, which devastated the Carolina coast in 1989, the ACBA educates and trains artisans in the traditional building arts, to foster exceptional craftsmanship and encourage the preservation, enrichment, and understanding of the world’s architectural heritage through a liberal arts education.

The tour, conducted by current president Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Colby M. Broadwater, III, gave the attendees an in-depth look into the different workshops and trade classes that are taught at the school. Masonry, blacksmithing, plasterwork, and timber framing, along with fine woodworking and classical architecture, are a few of the European-artisan teaching styles offered to about a hundred students. The school is our country’s only four year college dedicated to traditional trades which help to preserve the past and bring craft back to everyday architecture.
