In Memoriam: Margot Olson

With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Margot Olson, a beloved professor at Appalachian State University, a two-time ASID Carolinas Chapter President (2009-2010 and 2019-2020), and a tireless advocate for the interior design profession. Margot was not only a mentor to countless students but also profoundly shaped the trajectory of ASID Carolinas and the careers of many aspiring designers.

Margot’s passion for design was matched only by her dedication to ASID. Her advocacy at App State led to the enrollment of numerous students in the organization, including Emily Conn, whom she “voluntold” to take on the role of communications director during a time when she felt uncertain about her place in the industry. Margot’s unwavering belief in people was the catalyst for so many professional journeys.

Her dear friend, Susan Guest, who worked alongside her for years in the Foothills Association, recalls Margot’s enthusiasm and dedication at all levels of ASID Carolinas. Margot contributed to strategic planning, budget oversight, and even participated in creative events like designing a dog house for the Barkitecture Competition in 2014. She was always ready to lend a hand to the chapter, whether through organizing, strategizing, or simply offering her positive presence.

Susan fondly remembers a ghost tour during a conference in Charleston. As they walked past a dark cemetery, a bat buzzed Margot’s head, and in her witty way, Margot told everyone the next morning that Susan had bitten her on the neck. Her humor, energy, and light-hearted spirit brought joy to those around her, and she will be dearly missed.

Emily Walser adds that Margot was indeed an integral part of the chapter and so many lives. One of Emily’s fondest memories is a conversation at a chapter event where Margot shared that she always kept a Snickers bar in her bag, as you never knew when you might miss a meal or need an afternoon pick-me-up. Especially when traveling, which Margot and her husband George loved to do. She shared how, on several occasions when stranded at airports, that Snickers bar had saved them.

Duval Acker, another close colleague and friend, remembers Margot as an exemplary partner, especially in Chapter work. They traveled, stayed, and attended countless events together, even co-chairing gatherings. Duval fondly recalls overnights at Margot and George’s splendid home in Boone, where they were always treated like royalty with the couple’s warm hospitality. "Margot was a living treasure, and I miss her deeply," Duval shared.

Margot Olson’s legacy will live on in the hearts of the students, colleagues, and friends whose lives she touched. She was a bright light in our chapter, and her absence will be felt by many. Rest in peace, dear Margot. Your impact on the interior design community will never be forgotten.
