Margot Olson, ASID, Moves to Ohio

Margot Olson, ASID, past president of the Carolinas Chapter in 2010-11 and 2020-21, has retired from her position of Professor of Interior Design at Appalachian State University. She remains teaching until spring, 2022, through the phased retirement program. Margot has sold her home in Blowing Rock and has relocated to her family home in Ohio.

The Ohio home is listed on the Jefferson County, Ohio, registration of historic homes. The log structure was originally built as a stagecoach inn in 1811. The building has been in Margot’s family sporadically through the two centuries. During the mid-1800’s, the home was owned by members of Margot’s mother’s family. Around 1945, Margot’s great uncle on her father’s side of her family acquired the structure, disassembled it, and moved it to its current location on 120 acres of family land. In 1980, Margot’s parents added a more modern addition to the rear of the original log structure to include a modern kitchen and owner-bedroom suite. Margot has added to the ongoing livability of the log home by remodeling the owner bath and updating the kitchen. The most difficult part of the process of moving to a family home has been removal of the prior owner’s possessions and replacement with her own.

Margot plans to return to North Carolina often as her daughter and son-in-law live in Durham. She will spend considerable time in Park City, Utah as well where her son and daughter-in-law live. Margot is an avid hiker and skier. She has walked nearly all the Camino de Santiago in Spain and plans to add the Cotswold Way to her list of achievements. She further plans to continue skiing to age 100. Margot will also stay involved with the Carolinas Chapter by attending events in the future.
